POSTED 5/11/12
ASSASSIN'S CREED III: LIBERATION
Ubisoft
Vita
The Animus is coming, and everybody’s running, from north to New
Orleans in the Louisiana sun!
While Desmond has his marrow in the American Revolution space, this
Vita exclusive spinoff also takes place in the US in much the same
time, and you can probably guess where – just look for the Vengabu-
erm, Animus.
Our protagonist is strong, wily, well-armed and scrubs up mighty
fine in a dress. Yes, we do declare that we have a female
protagonist here. She’s Aveline de Grandpré, she’s of French/African
descent, and she’s basically Batman with boobs. Move over
Brotherhood, the Sisterhood’s in town!
As you’d both hope – and expect - Aveline’s escapades stick quite
snugly to the established Assassin’s Creed mould. There’s a
whole lotta sneakin’ going on, but sometimes the need for seriously
slashtastic bloodletting is there, and Aveline’s no slouch with a
blade – or poison dart-equipped parasol. Then, of course, there’s
the fetchin’. She takes on slavery, shipping magnatery, corrupt
Spanish types, those pesky Mayans’ ruins, quite a few alligators and
more in her exploits, be they gussied up as assassin, Southern lady
(running’s a bitch with all those bloomers flapping about) or slave
– three quite distinct costumes allowing three distinctly distinct
personas, all of which require distinctly different management
styles. Distinctly.
Being Vita-exclusive, it shouldn’t surprise that Vita-specific
controls are included, but fiddle-dee-dee, none invade playability
for the heck of it. Well, not too much. Otherwise, more
traditionally-controlled staples such as free-running work
satisfyingly well.
Basically, a big machine game’s been cannily shoehorned into a
little machine. The graphics may dip and dive a bit between lowly
and wowee, and things may stutter a tad here and there, but anybody
looking for adventuretastic Vita fun should find these vittles sure
is tasty.
Erm, after all, tomorrow is another day...
