AFTER HOURS ATHLETES
Sony
PS3/Move

Darts, pool and bowling: three pursuits requiring expert timing –
just like kung fu fighting. Yet they also seemingly need something
at odds with the level of acuity involved... copious amounts of
beer. As Johnnie Cochrane might declare, it just doesn’t make sense.
Putting that aside, PS3-equipped frothy monsters may be familiar
with darts, pool and bowling on their console de choix, via
Top Darts, Hustle Kings and High Velocity Bowling.
If so, move along and grab another tinnie, ’cos these three
long-available PSN games have been jammed onto one disc here, all in
their controlled-by-Move forms. You even get a code to download all
44 associated DLC items – individually; there’s no “download all”
option. Erps.
Unacquainted? OK, despite their titular explanatoritationalness,
we’ll elaborate...
Top Darts lets you loose on nine remixes of the pointy-pointy
pursuit, starting off, appropriately, in an Irish pub complete with
convivial background hubbub. Obviously you use the Move like a dart,
trying for various scores to prompt weird effusions from Mr Jovial
Commentator. You’ll learn stuff too, like 45’s apparently a bag of
nuts. It’s OK fun.
Hustle Kings brings assorted pool/snooker games to the table
(heh), all presented 3D like – although to nail most any shot you’ll
use overhead view. Funky augmented reality has you wielding a pool
cue, but only during calibration. Meh. It’s OK fun.
High Velocity Bowling’s the oldest offering, but given a Move
makeover. You bowl balls at pins. It’s OK fun.
Mercifully, all three games have local multiplayer, meaning communal
camaraderie and avoiding battling cheating fuck CPUs. Still,
ultimately all three pursuits are infinitely funnerer in real life.
AHA also spruiks a certain sportswear company’s promotional
campaign, but we ain’t namedropping Puma unless they go contra and
send us a funky black hoodie or summat. Hang on... shit!
