GREASE: THE OFFICIAL VIDEO GAME

505 Games
Wii (also on DS)

We’re confused. Whilst Peter Griffin declares that ‘the bird’ is the word, even when that’s actually two words and is, via use of the definite article, referring to one particular unidentified bird, Grease tells us that it is the word – the ‘it’ there representing ‘Grease’ as the word, not ‘it’, natch. So, which word, or indeed two words in one of these cases, is actually the word? Pondering such things may explain why we rarely sleep very well.

Enough of our insomnia-inspired BS though, for whether it’s actually the word or not, Grease is the game, is the game we’re reviewing. Does it possess groove and meaning, and is it the time, the place, the motion and the way we are feeling?

Well (uh-well-uh-well-uh-UH!), it all depends whether you’re a Grease fan or not. Yeah, that’s stating the bleeding obvious, but it’s a fact. Grease: The Official Video Game is what it is. A bunch of basic rhythm and party games where you wiggle and waggle the Wiimote as you wiggle and waggle your jacksie and appendages, or panel beat, or race cars – basically all the stuff from the film with all the characters, just Wii-ified – there’s even Balance Board support. Up to four greasy groovers can partake, and one can sing along whilst others do the wigglin’, wagglin’ and whatnot through a story mode or at random.

Speaking of singing, our fragile little mind cannot work out how an officially licensed game can dare foist decidedly average cover versions of those famous songs on the world, rather than the genuine warblings of Travolta, the PUSA from The West Wing’s missus and our Livvie. Most non-hydromatic.

Grease tragic? Then this is the one that you want (ooh-ooh-ooh, honey). Otherwise, well-uh-well-uh-well-uh-NUH!

take me back to the start...
