GREEN DAY ROCK BAND

EA
PS3 (also on Xbox 360, Wii)

If you started calling Green Day sell-outs around when they unleashed Dookie back in 1994, then boy are you gonna hate this!

If, however, you’re above the mental age of 11 and can appreciate that for a band to thrive and survive then success is a necessity, you may care to read on. Mind you, a Broadway musical?! OK, so we’re hypocrites…

Simply put, this is a version of the criminally underrated (in Australia, but the fact that EA have been too dickheaded to release Rock Band 2 here may have something to do with that) Guitar Hero alternative, developed by the originators of Guitar Hero (confused yet?), that features Green Day songs, and nothing by nobody else. Suck on that, Metallica, Aerosmith and Van Halen!

It’s only when you start bashing your way through the 40+ tracks included that you realise how many stonkingly good pop songs this trio have unleashed. Yes, pop. They’re catchy and sing-along. A spattering of (removed) ‘F’-words isn’t ‘punk’ as we know it – but we’re old and cranky.

As well as tracks you’d expect, the albums Dookie and American Idiot both feature in their entirety. As you play through on drums, guitar, bass or ‘vox’ you unlock stuff from the Green Day vaults – photos, interviews and such.

It’s not been done to the majestic scale of The Beatles: Rock Band, but then Green Day ain’t The Beatles. Nobody is. Ultimately, if you’re a fan of the Californian trio you’ll lurve this – we’d add some shit with ‘welcome to paradise’ appended, but every other jaded games writing hack is likely doing that…

take me back to the start...
