MAG

Sony
PS3

Apologies to any hoons excited by the heading, but MAG has nothing to do with fully sick rims. Rather it’s an acronym (Massive Action Game) for an initialism, in that as a game it’s an MMOFPS – that’s ‘Massive Multiplayer Online First-Person Shooter’. Well, we think that’s what it stands for. We did have fun coming up with some others…

Ever been playing one of the innumerable Call of Duty variants online, appeared on the landscape ready for some killination and instantly been deaderised by some complete douchebag arsewipe before you had a chance to cock your weapon? Well, imagine that with the potential for 128 douchebags to all be gunning for your blood and you have a start as to what MAG’s all about.

It’s actually a pretty remarkable feat. It’s online only – so forget playing with yourself, or any hope of it actually working in 10 years time – but manages to make a pretty huge war happening as two armies of up to 128 members go for each others’ throats, scrotes and other appendages.

A headset (sold separately, natch) is basically essential for this one, as communication, teamwork and strategy – rather than all-out gung-ho - is required to get anywhere other than corpsed-up. Pleasingly, we experienced little in the way of slowdown despite the large amount of data being flung around at any one time.

It isn’t flawless, but ultimately MAG is an impressive feat that’s really only likely to appeal to seriously hardcore FPS war aficionados – the types that wear khakis to Woolies. Have fun guys!

take me back to the start...
