PLANTS VS ZOMBIES

Popcap
Vita (also on basically everything else ever)

According to just the way it bloody well is, zombies tend to take their sweet time about stuff. So, their quick smart shamble-scramble onto the Vita has been somewhat surprising. So, is it worth quick smart shambling-scrambling to get it?

Come on, this is Popcap, so duh! We have to admit that, despite being slavish addicts to most everything Poppy and Cappy over the years, originally learning that PvZ was a ‘tower defence’ game made us emit a groan that, perhaps appropriately, was rather zombie-like. The whole idea of having one side to protect whilst a foe tries to invade is just a tad too close to that turn-based stragety (thanks Bugs) stuff that usually makes us discharge something else starting with zed... ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Somehow, however, Popcap have made it palatable for those of a more throwaway bent like us (and not just because of the shinygasmic platinum trophy that awaits). Should we have ever doubted?

The deal is that you represent the plants. You have a front lawn and lawnmowers, and you’re damned well gonna protect this verdant nirvana from shambling zombie bastiches who want... well, what does any zombie want? Brains! Not that lawnmowers are sentient as far as we’re aware, but we’ll magnanimously suspend disbelief in the name of entertainment.

You have an increasingly vast arsenal of increasingly wild vegetation to choose from to fend off attacks from an increasingly bizarre array of zombies that plod leftwards to overtake your treasured sanctuary. That stragety we mentioned is required both in weaponry chosen to repel whichever attacks, and in how it's deployed. The Vita's touch controls are perfect for it.

Even if the term ‘stragety games’ or indeed the corructly speeled ‘strategy games’ - usually makes you want to go hilly at Usain Boltish speed, you may be surprised by how addictive (and funny) PvZ can be.

take me back to the start...
