LEGO MARVEL SUPER HEROES
WB Games
PS3 (also on
PS4, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC, Vita, 3DS)
Damn,
superheroes can be whiny little bitches.
You’d think they’d
be all hardened-the-fuck-up, but no. “Batman got this game,” “Wonder
Woman got that game…” – just some of the whinges that emanated from
the Marvel superheroverse before LEGO got sick of it and shut them
up with their own game. Marvel
Pinball obviously wasn’t enough.
Still, we’re happy,
for while really it’s just another LEGO game, it’s evolves the
franchise – a teensy bit - and, well, it has Hulk. He’s a big mofo,
too. Kind of a maxifig.
In a staggering fit of originality
the story revolves around Doctor Doom’s plans to take over the world
(insert appropriate “MWAHAHA!” here), with his nefarious – and
tautological - ‘Doom Ray of Doom’. Hey, world domination’s taxing,
supervillains can’t all be marketing dynamos too.
As such,
Marvel goodies are enlisted to counter Doom and myriad more Marvel
baddies. The Avengers? Check. Fantastic Four? Yep. X-Men?
Absolutely. Spidey and most others boyish and girlie who aren’t
joiners? Uh-huh. Plus, Hulk!
If you’re unacquainted with
LEGO’s adventures then first things first – head pat. Taking
whichever core licence that’s been licenced, they add genuine humour
and deliver a good day or more of gaming to the dedicated. You
trundle about smashing stuff and gathering studs, while trying to
advance in whatever often obtuse way the game demands.
In
LMSH, the characters’ varied powers come into play. Some can
melt silver, some gold. Some are computer literate, some can get
slingy and stuff. The aim, essentially, is to complete main missions
to unlock them, then go back in free play to do superheroic mopping
up in an open New York world. Oh, and continually rescue Stan Lee.
He’s getting on, he’s a bit doddery.
Marvel fans feeling
pouty about previous LEGO DC lovin’ can now shut up and play this.
If not, HULK SMASH!
