MODNATION RACERS

Sony
PS3 (also on PSP)

Oh for the sake of all that’s got holes in it, another bloody kart game?

Yes, it’s another bloody kart game, but don’t moan “bored now” yet, for this one actually possesses a twist. It’s a pretty good twist too, but we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

ModNation Racers brings everything you expect from a kart game to the table – tracks, karts, weaponry (which is stackable for extra oomph when blowing an opponent away – nice!) and cutesy characters. The twist is that it’s been melded to a distinctly LittleBigPlanet hippie-trippy DIY vibe.

It’s been melded well, too. Build your own karts from basic templates? Check. Build your own racers (or ‘mods’ in the game’s parlance) from a blank white being? Check. Build your own tracks ranging from Scalextric beginner’s kit through to the kind of magnum opus that would make the Nürburgring blush? Check.

This DIY ethos is almost alarmingly deep. Whilst the aforementioned LBP saw Sony in frequent fits of copyright infringement panic as they went the slash and burn on some marvellous – but unoriginal – creations, they’ve seemingly seen the laissez-faire light here. As such, pick a copyrighted character, any character, and there’s likely an ace likeness created by somebody with way too much spare time available for download.

These additions are fortuitous, for the load times border on insanity-inducing and the kart mechanics aren’t as polished as competition such as the fab Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing. Simply, if you just wanna race, get that. If you dig on creating stuff with really capable creation tools though, then get ModNation Racers.

take me back to the start...
