SUPER MARIO MAKER 3DS

Nintendo

It’s just like Weird Science, except entirely different!

Well, you do have your very own meat puppet Mario to play with. As we learned from the Wii U iteration last year, Super Mario Maker 3DS puts you in the shoes of the masterful game guru and original Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto. We hope you have small tootsies...

As with its predecessor, the aim of the game is to create your very own Mario levels, with a plethora of creation tools at your disposal and four classic eras to plunder. Even better, it doesn’t take forever to unlock all the bits and bobs this time, as you just need to get diligent in the Super Mario Challenge mode.

So, you’ve created your masterpiece, now it’s time to share! Or not. Disappointingly there’s no upload ability. Sure you can swap with other people via StreetPass or local multiplayer, but that’s it. Still, if you made a level rife with Hammer Bros then this is doing the universe a favour, for as anybody who’s ever hit World 8.3 in the original Super Mario Bros will know, Hammer Bros blow.

As well as improved tutorials, a bunch of special challenges have been added, which help make up for the minimal amount of other peoples’ levels that you can download. Yep, Nintendo have wielded their divine hammer so that only ones that they approve of can be downloaded for extra playtime fun. This puts a bit of a damper on replayability if you don’t feel like getting creative all the time.

OK, so we’re sounding a bit negative, but the portability of this 3DS incarnation makes up for some sins and, as with most everything with the names ‘Nintendo’ and ‘Mario’ emblazoned upon it, everything is absolutely rock solidly slick.

So, be free and make levels! But riddle them with Hammer Bros and we’ll go totally Bowser on your arse.

take me back to the start...
